Report /// The Wolf Man
August 2, 2010 by Corinne Garcia for The Christian Science Monitor
Doug Smith was alone, setting traps in the backcountry of Yellowstone National Park, when he got that eerie feeling that he was being watched. He looked up directly into the piercing eyes of a female wolf, just feet away. As project leader of Yellowstone's wolf reintroduction program, one might assume Dr. Smith has this type of encounter all the time. But in 16 years on the job, he's rarely been face to face with the wolves he studies.Tags: the christian science monitor, conservation, wolves, endangered species

Blog /// Change in the Wash
July 27, 2010 by Andrea Bennett
Could you live without your clothes dryer? How about washing your clothes in cold water and drying them on a rack? Seventh Generation, the maker of nontoxic laundry and household products, is challenging people to do both this summer. Certainly saving the energy is a responsible thing to do: According to the US Department of Energy, about 90 percent of the energy used for washing clothes in a conventional top-load washer goes toward heating the water.Tags: laundry, conservation, energy, money

Report /// People Making a Difference | Mary Crowley
July 2, 2010 by Paul Van Slambrouck for The Christian Science Monitor
Mary Crowley would rather be at sea. But she's not. Instead, she is in a small conference room at a roadside Marriott in this landlocked town north of Sacramento. Around her are mainly men, many with beards, and many with baseball caps pulled down low and arms crossed tight. They are listening. Many of them would also rather be at sea. Can these wishes be joined? We shall see in the next month or so. Ms. Crowley has long hair, a ruddy outdoor complexion, and a sincere manner. She wants to sail west in the next month or two, out to what is called the North Pacific Trash Gyre. Her goal is to start cleaning up the plastic trash that has leaped into social consciousness over the past couple of years.
